Microsoft Surface - the new hybrid gadget

2013-02-22 12:31 pm

Microsoft are making there presence known in the hybrid tablet market with there new Surface RT and Surface Pro. This is Microsoft's attempt to go straight to the top with one device. Its other touch screen devices have not made a big impact in the past so they are hoping this is the one. And it certainly could do it. It looks and feels different from the other tablets on the market, and thats no mean feat. The feel of the cool, matte surface is durable to the touch, and give the impression you won't have to be calling your gadget insurance company any time soon.

It has a larger screen than the rest of the tablets on the market coming in at 10.6 inches compared to the average tablets 9.7 and 10.1 inches. That's a full inch bigger than the new iPad. But the resolution on the other hand is a lot less at only 1,366 x 768. This is compensated by the device's design and development for its 16:9 display. It almost makes up for it's lack of resolution. The tablet has a full USB 2.0 connection which will allow you to connect everything from thumb drives, keyboards, hubs, mice and anything else you can think of. It also has the ever useful micro-HDMI connector. Then there is the very durable kickstand that will also save on calls about tablet gadget insurance as it is very tough and will not break on you.

What makes this tablet a hybrid is the fact you can plug it into a keyboard dock and here it is a very important addition to the device. When the tablet is combined with either of the keyboards Microsoft has on the market to go with it, it become a very good replacement to a laptop. The two are the €119 Touch Cover and the €129 Type Cover. The Touch Cover is a great companion to the tablet. It is a 3mm thick piece of polyurethane and it is lovely to, as its name suggests, touch. As it is a pressure sensitive touch pad it will take a while to get used to typing on it. Microsoft suggests it will take 4-5 days to reach your peak typing speed.

The Microsoft Surface is a great hybrid tablet, ready to rival anything thats on the market. You will need to have tablet insurance as it is starting at €479 for the 32GB version and going up in price from there, with the keyboards at least €119 extra. But even at this price it is competitive against what is out there. I think it is worth the investment.
